Mark and Dobby attend to an ailing Gerard.

Summary[]

Mark has asked Dobby to move in with him, and Jeremy is faced with the prospect of moving out to make way. But Jeremy has been dragging his heels and Mark is increasingly worried that Dobby will move in with his rival, Gerrard instead.

Gerrard passes away from flu and Dobby joins Gerrard's sister in helping with funeral preparations, to which Mark is inevitably dragged along. Mark gets the job at the bathroom furnishings store. Jeremy tries a therapy session and becomes convinced therapy is the greatest thing ever and everyone needs to have it.

Plot[]

Hans and a reluctant Jeremy hold a bonfire ceremony to "burn all the band stuff." "Today is the day the music died," according to Hans as he now has a real job as a bathroom furnishings salesman. The last iteration of their band was called '13 Bastards.' Mark continues to move his office things in to Jeremy's room in anticipation for Dobby moving in, but Jeremy still hasn't begun to move out. Hans offers Jeremy a place to stay ("the bag") and alerts Mark that there are wanted positions in bathroom furnishings.

Moments later, Mark is at Dobby's apartment, checking out the vibe and seeing if Dobby will show signs of either wanting to move in or not move in. Dobby tells him that she was at sickly Gerrard's the previous night, playing Connect 4 with him, and that he "is not in a great way." As they prepare lunch together, Mark accurately perceives Dobby's statements as indications of her reluctance to move in. As a test, Mark damages her microwave, rationalizing that if she buys a new one, she is surely not moving in. At that moment Gerrard calls Dobby and asks her to come over and she asks Mark if this is ok.

At Gerrard's bedside things get tense between him and Mark as both are still vying for the affection of Dobby. Gerrard makes an excellent move against Mark by suggesting that Dobby move in with him, rent free. Even Mark admits this is a near unbeatable proposition. Gerrard, as he states is "playing the long game."

Gerrard's house

Gerrard's house.

Later at Apollo House, Jeff surprises Mark by showing up to pick up Ian James on behalf of Sophie. She and Jeff are apparently back on, and Mark thinks Jeff may be in fact Herod come to kill off all his offspring.

It is a humdrum evening at the flat. Jeremy has garnered free provisions with some cat food and dentures to throw off the Nectar inspectors. Dobby is over and delights over the gourmet options for the evening, margaritas or pizza. Jeremy reveals that he plans on selling planning to sell the headline 'THREE-O WALCOTT' to a tabloid newspaper when Theo Walcott turns thirty. As Mark needs to move out, and Jeremy says he needs therapy, Mark offers to pay for Jeremy's therapy as a means to encourage him to move sooner. Just then Gerrard phones Dobby asking her to come over. Mark manhandles her phone and expresses that he doesn't want her to visit him.

At Croydon Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice, Jeremy waits for his first appointment but backs out when he sees his potential therapist eating a Twix, which he sees as a bad sign. Mark is at Baths, Bathrooms & Fittings waiting for his interview with Robert Grayson and Super Hans gives him interview advice. Mark, being his typical nervous self, accidentally calls himself "Robert Grayson." Nevertheless Mark makes it to the second round of interviews and walks home delighted. On his way back to the flat, he sees that Jeremy has ostensibly bailed on therapy, and used the money to chow down on onion bhajis at the local Indian restaurant. Perturbed, Mark sarcastically orders a giant curry feast and ambushes Jeremy with what would be his second supper at the flat.

Then, Dobby walks in. She looks devastated and reveals to the boys that Gerrard has just died. Mark and Jeremy cannot believe it. The next day, Mark, Dobby and Katie, go to Cremation Funerals to make arrangements for Gerrard. To Mark's disappointment, Gerrard's service is scheduled for exactly the same moment as his second interview at Baths, Bathrooms & Fittings. Mark tries to make a protest but Dobby stops him.

Gerrard's funeral

The funeral.

Jeremy gives therapy another try but on his second visit, finds out his would-be therapist's name is Dr. Bendix. On the day of the service, Mark does in fact go to his second interview with Grayson, this time with his fellow applicants — Hugh, and a few others. This too goes well, and Mark is awkwardly chipper arriving late to Gerrard's funeral. Gerrard's funeral is shockingly undignified, as both Johnson and Mark provide poorly formed eulogies, upsetting poor Dobby.

Back at the therapy office, Jeremy antagonizes Dr. Bendix, whose cool demeanor disarms Jeremy's diatribe, only speaking up to offer Jeremy some water.

Mark makes a detour to get Gerrard's "wake cake," only to also appear late at the wake at Dobby's, further upsetting her. To add to this, the cake Mark got was a cheap football-themed soccer cake which Mark pretends is intentional in design. Jeremy shows up to the wake too and now declares that he loves therapy and that he's worked out finally that he's not a very successful musician.

Dobby calls Mark into the kitchen, and she reveals to him that she has fixed her microwave. Mark asks Dobby point-blank if she intends to move in, and finally with her feet to the fire, Dobby reveals that Gerrard has left behind some money for her. "I feel very... free," Dobby says, as Mark concedes that Gerrard is indeed "shitting on [him] from heaven".
